Researchers from DT-GEO are featured in the insightful documentary, “Ready for the Tsunami?”, a one-hour film that scrutinizes the seismic vulnerability of the Iberian Peninsula to mega-earthquakes and tsunamis. This region, surprisingly, holds the highest risk for such natural disasters in the Atlantic Ocean.

The documentary presents a thorough investigation into the region’s past, uncovering that Southwest Europe has experienced up to 14 tsunamis in the last 9,000 years. It sheds light on the significant 1755 Great Lisbon Earthquake and Fire, an event that not only altered the course of European history but also marked the dawn of modern Earth Sciences.

Beyond just recounting historical events, “Ready for the Tsunami?” engages in a global dialogue, drawing parallels with other tsunami-prone areas like Hawaii, Japan, and the Pacific Northwest. The film emphasizes the importance of shared knowledge and solutions in mitigating the impact of these natural phenomena.

The documentary is inspired by Erik Martinez-Westley’s successful PBS series on earthquake preparedness and extends his narrative with a focus on both the risks and innovative technologies for tsunami prevention. It navigates through stunning locations, revealing the unknown history of past tsunamis and the advanced research and technology that can offer protection.

Structured in two parts, “Risks (Science and History)” and “Solutions (Prevention and New Technologies)”, the film underscores the reality that while plate tectonics cannot be controlled, awareness and preparedness can significantly reduce the dangers they pose.

The documentary serves as a critical resource for anyone interested in geophysics, disaster preparedness, and the continuous efforts to safeguard communities against natural catastrophes.
