On December 19th, the documentary ¿Preparados para el Tsunami? (Ready for the Tsunami?) will air at 23:00 on Movistar+. The one-hour film explores the science behind earthquakes and tsunamis, focusing on Southwest Europe, and highlights innovative solutions to mitigate their devastating impact. The documentary, co-produced by Goat Knight and RTVE with support from RTP (Portugal) and Movistar+, recently premiered at the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona.

Among the experts featured in the film is Jorge Macías from the University of Malaga, who contributes insights from his research on tsunami modeling and risk assessment. Macías is also involved in DT-GEO, a European project that advances the use of high-performance computing to improve our understanding of geohazards. His work highlights the critical role of simulation tools in assessing tsunami impacts and preparing coastal regions for potential crises.

DT-GEO and Tsunami Preparedness

DT-GEO (Digital Twin for Geophysical Extremes) is a European initiative aimed at enhancing disaster prediction and response using advanced modeling and high-performance computing. One of the project’s key focuses is simulating tsunami scenarios to improve hazard forecasting and develop effective mitigation strategies. By leveraging state-of-the-art computational techniques, DT-GEO supports decision-making for policymakers and emergency planners, helping to reduce the risks associated with geophysical extremes.

In ¿Preparados para el Tsunami?, Jorge Macías and DT-GEO’s contributions provide an essential perspective on how cutting-edge science and technology can inform disaster preparedness. Their work underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex natural hazards like tsunamis.

The Premiere at ICM-CSIC

The documentary’s premiere at ICM-CSIC featured leading experts from various disciplines, alongside survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami who shared their experiences. A roundtable discussion followed the screening, exploring the science, history, and societal impact of tsunamis.

This event not only highlighted the collaborative effort behind ¿Preparados para el Tsunami? but also underscored the vital contributions of researchers like Jorge Macías and initiatives like DT-GEO in advancing our understanding of natural disasters.

Tune in on Movistar+ on December 19th to learn more about the science and innovation shaping our response to tsunami risks.
