DESCRIPTION:Finn Løvholt presented “Development of a Digital-Twin for Probabilistic Tsunami Forecasting” at the SIAM Conference on Mathematical and Computational issues in the Geosciences. \nAbstract. A new Digital Twin (DT) for Probabilistic Tsunami Forecasting (PTF) presently under development is presented here. The first version of this DT is a PTF that combine early estimation of earthquake parameters with large ensembles of urgent shallow water tsunami propagation simulations using the Tsunami-HySEA model (Selva et al. 2021\, Nature Commun.). In this first PTF\, earthquake information is conveyed to the tsunami model only during forecasting initiation. For the new Digital Twin\, continuous data assimilation for an extended set of data sources (e.g. improved earthquake solutions\, sea level tsunami data\, GNSS) will enable a close to real time synthesis of data products and modelling\, updating the model based on the incident data stream. In addition\, the DT will be modularised to allow for including improved wave and source physics through dispersion\, non-hydrostatic generation\, inundation improved earthquake physics\, and cascading earthquake triggered landslide tsunamis. In the presentation we will present the first version of the PTF\, followed by an outline of the design of the new digital twin\, as well as briefly describing the present status and plans for further development. DESCRIPTION:Sebastian Noe (ETH) presents the poster “Collaborative Seismic Earth Model” at the 11th EGU Galileo Conference. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe “Solid Earth and Geohazards in the Exascale Era” conference aims to unite some of the world’s foremost minds in various branches of computational geosciences to collectively address the challenges posed by Exascale computing. Europe is taking substantial strides in the global race to Exascale\, with significant investments in infrastructure and application pillars. In 2023\, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking will have deployed 3 Pre-exascale machines\, with 2 Exascale systems to follow. \nFrom a scientific and service perspective\, this unprecedented pan-European infrastructure presents numerous opportunities. However\, the transition is complex and necessitates a collaborative effort from scientists\, software developers\, and data analysts. \nThe conference will revolve around four sessions designed to facilitate idea exchange and brainstorming on trending topics: \n\nPreparation and optimization of HPC codes to Exascale (S1)\nEdge-to-end data workflows (S2)\nState-of-the-art in computational geosciences (S3)\nHorizon Europe and EuroHPC Policies (S4)\n\nUltimately\, the conference aims to produce a consensus-driven white paper outlining the vision and roadmap for our community’s journey into the Exascale era. In addition to these sessions\, the conference program includes master classes aligned with the session topics to provide training for early-career scientists. DESCRIPTION:SSA 2023 featured a talk about ‘Rapid Dynamic Rupture Modeling of the February 6\, 2023\, Kahramanmaraş\, Turkey-Syria Earthquake Doublet’\, presented by Alice-Agnes Gabriel\, Thomas Ulrich\, Mathilde Marchandon\, James Biemiller\, and John Rekoske (LMU). \n  \nAlso\, Marta Han\, Leila Mizrahi\, and Stefan Wiemer (ETH) presented the poster on ‘Sequence-specific Updating of European ETAS Model with Application to the 2023 Türkiye-Syria Earthquake Sequence’ at SSA 2023. \nIn a recent study by the DT-GEO project\, researchers analyzed the spatio-temporal evolution of the aftershock sequence following the 2023 M7.8 Türkiye-Syria earthquake. Leveraging a generic ETAS-based operational forecasting model for Europe\, calibrated using the European Seismic Hazard Model data\, the team focused on data between 1990 and 2015. This investigation aimed to evaluate how the model would have forecasted the temporal and spatial evolution of the earthquake sequence. \nSurprisingly\, the observed productivity of the sequence exceeded the generic model’s forecast\, echoing findings from earlier studies on different sequences. To address this\, the study advocates for sequence-specific updates to improve model-observation alignment. \nThe study introduces a novel strategy for visualizing aftershock forecasting and operational earthquake forecasting results. This approach aims to accurately describe productivity and spatial aftershock distribution while mitigating biases in temporal decay predictions. By maintaining fixed temporal kernel parameters and calibrating remaining variables using sequence-specific data\, promising results were achieved\, suggesting better forecasts than the baseline model. \nVisit the SSA 23 website for more information about the conference.
